2nd Annual Daytona TT

Mar 22 2018

Jared “Jammer” Mees kicked off the 2018 American Flat Track season the same way he finished 2017 — on top.

Mees, the 2017 ATF Grand National Champion, successfully defended last year’s inaugural Daytona TT win with another electrifying victory at the legendary Daytona International Speedway on Thursday, March 15.

Mees’ enters the new season with a target on his back running the #1 plate, and his first checkered flag of the season was no “gimme”. He worked his way to the front of a five-rider pack at the beginning of the race, banging bars with fellow Indian Wrecking Crew Rider Brad “The Bullet” Baker before edging out a hard-fought battle with Yamaha rider J.D. Beach who finished less than a half-second behind Mees. Rounding out the podium in the 25-lap main event was Kawasaki rider Henry Wiles finishing third.

The 0.6-mile dirt track designed by seven-time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr was laid out on top of the grass field of the famed Daytona International Speedway. The unique course and its iconic setting not only offered up some killer photo ops, it also threw a few wrinkles into the mix for the riders. The track featured both right- and left-hand turns, as well as a tabletop jump on the inside straight.

Motorcycle racing is at the core of Daytona Bike Week. The historic Daytona 200 event dates back to 1937 where the top two-wheeled speed freaks of the era would tackle the combination Daytona 200 beach-road course on the shores of the Atlantic and State Road A1A. That event ultimately marked the beginning of the annual Bike Week rally, now in its 77th year.

KTM 450 SX-F rider Dan Bromley (#62) took top honors in the AFT Singles class

Introduced in 2017, the Daytona TT has quickly become one of the highlights of the annual 12-day biker bash in Florida. This high-octane, family-friendly event showcases the top professional AFT Twins and Singles flat track racers in the sport, as well as the Harley-Davidson Hooligan class of bar-bangin’ amateur riders. This year fans were also treated to stuntman, adrenaline junkie and world record holder Bubba Blackwell jumping his XR750 over 14 GMC pickups to kick off the night in high-flying style.

If you’re ever in town for Daytona Bike Week, make sure the Daytona TT is on your list of can’t-miss events. Regardless whether or not you’re a flat track fan, the jam-packed night of racing is well worth the price of admission.
