The 2018 Rock, Rumble & Rebellion Chieftain Dark Horse

Aug 16 2018

2018 marks the third year of the “Rock, Rumble & Rebellion” bike build collaboration between Kuryakyn and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. Each year the design concept underscored one of those three words, and this year’s theme pays tribute to the more than 100,000 bikers that ditch the daily grind for nine days of full-throttle “Rebellion” at The Chip.

After two years of working with Harley-Davidson models (2016 Road Glide and 2017 Street Glide), we were stoked to take an Indian model to another level and showcase our design team’s versatility.

When you think of Indian Motorcycle, words like “classic” and “refined” come to mind. Skirted fenders, smooth, flowing lines and the traditional headdress logo adorning the tank all reflect the timeless Indian “Motocycle” heritage. So when we were tasked with turning a 2018 Chieftain Dark Horse into a one-of-a-kind custom bike representing the all-out revelry that goes down every year at The Chip, our approach had to be the antithesis of that mindset.

A bone stock Chieftain Dark Horse was our blank canvas. After compiling a complete parts list, we stripped the bike down to its frame and enlisted the talents of renowned Austrian artist Marcus Pfeil to bring our design concept of evoking the loud, bold, brash and rebellious attitude found throughout musical history to life. Injecting his own custom flavor on every available inch of the bike, the end result turned heads everywhere it went at the 78th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The mind-blowing paint combines a silky smooth metallic satin black base and brushed steel-styled silver panels outlined with painstakingly clean hand-pressed gold leaf. The coup de grâce comes via the airbrushed silhouettes of dozens of revolutionary musicians and bands seen throughout the paint, all of which portrayed true rebellion through their musical mastery and raw, provocative approach.

"I had the opportunity to ride the 2018 Rock, Rumble & Rebellion bike in the Legends Ride and it was a showstopper! People were gathering to take photos of the American music icons painted on the bike, looking for their favorite and pointing out the custom parts that set the bike apart. The effects the artist used to depict the legends of rock and roll are simply outstanding. Kuryakyn put together a timeless motorcycle masterpiece that really defines what the Buffalo Chip is all about." - Rod Woodruff, Buffalo Chip President

From the Legends Ride in Deadwood to a photo shoot during the Eric Church concert to getting the party started on the Wolfman Jack stage before Kid Rock melted 50,000+ faces at The Chip, the Rebellion Chieftain Dark Horse was one of the main celebrity attractions at this year’s Sturgis Rally. Jaws dropped everywhere it went as admirers took photos of the various musical icons that represent life at the Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling®.

The Rebellion Chieftain Dark Horse is also loaded with dozens of Kuryakyn products, many making their official public debut on this build. Included from our all-new Phantom collection are Driver Floorboards, Brake Pedal Pad, Shift Peg, Mirrors, and Levers, all designed to give classically styled Indian big twins an aggressive custom look with their modern styling.

Additionally, “never-before-seen” products like the new Vantage Signature Series by John Shope (Dash Console, Horn Cover, and Headlight Bezel) and Hardline Signature Series by Fred Kodlin (Handlebars and Engine Guards) were incorporated into the build. Shope and Kodlin represent two of the top names in the American and European custom bike scenes, and their tenacious, no-nonsense approach to their craft was a perfect fit for the “Rebellion” theme.

The Vantage Signature Series is slated to launch in early September, while the Hardline Signature Series bars and engine guards are in the early stages of product development with an expected release date in early 2019. (View the full parts list below.)

The aura and allure of “The Best Party Anywhere™” at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip is something we at Kuryakyn are truly proud to be part of, and the Rock, Rumble & Rebellion bike builds have allowed us to express that same energy in a very unique way. Although this build signifies the end of the “Rock, Rumble & Rebellion” theme, we’re just getting started. Stay tuned for what’s on tap in 2019!

Did we mention that this one-of-a-kind bike can be yours? Anyone interested in owning the 2018 Rebellion Chieftain Dark Horse is urged to contact the Buffalo Chip at 605-210-1024.
